re-posting a post from motion heads

did a bunch of pencil drawing revisions in sequence 14 today. finish those off tomorrow morning and then do a bunch more coloring.

it's a relief the entryway light isn't filled with water anymore. nothing like the thrill of the possibility of electrocution to make you skip a little faster past the front door to the studio...

coloring, coloring...

thanks to Ellen for her diligent efforts this week coloring lineart for Sequence 03 - here's a frame of where I'm at with Shot 08/09:

Eric has been plowing away at backgrounds, and Janelle has been quiet, but probably been burning lead too, in-betweening...

didn't make it in to school today to digitize drawings and empty/fill up the Google Drive: that's priority on the list for tomorrow, along with borrowing a Cintiq or two for summer use.

ordered business cards today...exciting.  : )

cape may, ogre weather

this little two-day trek out to the south jersey coast turned out to give some nice color ideas for the ogre's world...

I just realized...

I don't think the Ogre packed any swim trunks.

Pity.

UPDATE!!!

a full crew, today

ellen, & eric the blasé.

ellen at full color ahead.

janelle pointing something significant out to eric

chris, ellen, eric, & janelle, making a day of it.

So today we had a full complement of artists at work on the film  - janelle, still fresh from Annecy and with elegant new couture (thank you for the festival goodies - you're a sweetie!), back at the disc, ellen, recently returned from a Peruvian adventure & lending a be-gloved hand to the color effort, eric, also fresh from an out-of-state sojourn, & with brand new computing device, cranking out the backgrounds, & chris, himself back from a Cape May vacation from a vacation & coloring ogres...

everyone fresh & in good form - a pleasure to be with you all...  : )

Ogre sells sea shells by the sea shore...

...in a little red pail.  He could have had a small business with tax exemptions and a nice little island life.  But instead he chased mermaid tail.  And we all know what happened after that.  Something to think about.

• 1 ogre sleeve base
• 2 ogre shirt
• 3 ogre pants

for the mermaid:

•  50% opacity

starting in on coloring

Ellen and Rusty came over and we commenced coloring.

A few thousand drawings to color. 18 minutes per drawing...aiming to get that down to 10 minutes per drawing. It's not paintbucket-style coloring - each image is like its own painting.

Need to figure out how to handle tracebacks - lots of boiling on today's test. Still image? Re-draw the tracebacks more precisely? Animate only the line? only the color? Dot, dot, dot...

ogre loses it

some days...

but not today - today was pretty good.

motion heads business cards

well, since Janelle did hers, I thought I'd post the design I've been working on for the studio, as well:

Let there be light!

I think this shot was inspired by a moment in Chris' life when he woke up after a long night of "partying" in a sand dune on a golf course.  Or maybe I'm remembering something from the Simpsons... Either way, seq04sh01 should be a lesson to all you kids about getting into trouble with mermaids you don't know.

bon voyage à Janelle!

happy travels to Janelle, who leaves on Sunday for a week in France, where she will attend the Annecy festival in the French Alps. I wish I were going, too - it's been a habit of mine for several years, but this time around I will hold down the Ogre fort with Eric, working on backgrounds and finishing off the last set of keys and breakdowns. She goes with a new music video to show and the experience of having been there once before with our UArts workshop group.

anyway, check out her arty & minimalist new business card, which will be proffered to all kinds of animators at Annecy, I am sure.

thanks for the pile of in-betweens you got done today, and looking forward to sketches, photos, and stories when you get back. : )

color sample file sent out

This is a screen shot of the sample file that was just sent out to folks who graciously volunteered to help out with coloring. Filling out these characters involves mixing a good number of colors to get the layered chalk pastel/watercolor look we're after.

I still have Sequence XVII on my plate to key, to say nothing of revisions, but it's time to get things moving on the color front. Our background department is cranking into gear - 5 per week, right Eric? : D ...that old hourglass is a-tickin'...

Sequence XII, Shot 01: ogre surfaces

seq12 sh01 ogre surfaces from Christopher Magee on Vimeo.

Today was a full day of capturing the pencil tests that had accumulated over the past several weeks. Two of the longer ones are posted here today. About 2/3 of the way through Sequence XIV, and then it's Sequence XVII and it's on to coloring (and revisions), with a goal of June 6th to start in on color concerns.

Tomorrow morning, the gym: sitting on one's butt all day is not a good idea.

My friend Soyeon Kim just finished a major personal work, Ahco On the Road. It's pretty impressive, and I am reminded of what my classmates are capable of - kind of intimidating! But motivating, as well.

Better get to sleep before it's morning again...
